Cavite Vice Governor Jolo Revilla had netizens scratching their heads after he called the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan as one of the first Philippine heroes.
Revilla paid tribute to Magellan in a Facebook post Tuesday (April 27) to mark the 500th year since the Battle of Mactan on April 27, 1521.
In that fight, the datu Lapu-Lapu defeated and killed Magellan, who led Spanish forces in an attempt to conquer Cebu.
“Isang pagsaludo sa kagitingan ng isa sa mga unang bayani ng bayan na si Ferdinand Magellan na nagbuwis ng kanyang buhay para sa kalayaan 500 taon na ang nakararaan!” Revilla’s post read.
Netizens poked fun at Revilla’s error. Some of the comments read: “Si Machete po talaga yan;” History teachers left the group;” and “Sure na po ba tayo na si ‘Ferdinand Magellan’ ito?”
Revilla has since edited the post and stated that Lapu-Lapu, not Magellan, was one of the first Philippine heroes.
