President Rodrigo Duterte said he deliberately disappeared from public view as critics questioned his absence in the middle of a new surge in COVID-19 cases.
In a public address aired Monday (April 12), Duterte explained why he wasn’t seen in public for nearly two weeks.
“Noong nawala ako ng ilang araw, talagang sinadya ko ‘yon. Ganoon ako eh. Pagka kinakalkal mo ako lalo akong—‘yong parang bata. Pagka lalo mo akong kinakantyawan eh mas lalo akong gagana,” he said.
Rumors about Duterte’s health surfaced due to his absence in the public eye. There was a report that the President suffered a stroke, which Malacañang denied.
Duterte’s long time aide, Senator Bong Go, posted photos of the President playing golf, jogging and riding a motorcycle ahead of his address to show that he’s healthy and alive.
