Palace refutes claim Duterte’s guard died of Covid-19

By Prince Golez

Malacañang on Thursday denied that a member of the Presidential Security Group (PSG) succumed to coronavirus disease (Covid-19).

“Wala pong katotohanan yan. Wala pong namatay na miyembro ng PSG dahil sa po sa COVID. Ito ay kinumpirma sa akin ni General Jess Durante, ang hepe po ng PSG,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in a virtual presser.

Earlier this month, Durante revealed that at least 45 PSG personnel tested positive for Covid-19, which resulted in the cancelation of President Rodrigo Duterte’s Talk to the People address.

Last year, Duterte admitted that some members of his security detail had been vaccinated with Sinopharm’s Covid-19 vaccine despite having not been registered with the Food and Drug Administration at that time.

Roque previously said that the President prefers to be vaccinated with Sinopharm’s vaccine. The Chinese state-owned firm has yet to apply for an emergency use authority of its Covid-19 vaccine in the Philippines.
