PH gov’t ‘studying’ India travel ban over Covid-19 variant

By Prince Golez

The Philippines is studying the possibility of banning the entry of travellers from India in a bid to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus variant from entering the country, Malacañang said.

“Pinag-aaralan na po iyan bagama’t wala naman po tayong direct flights ngayon sa India,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in a televised presser Monday.

India recently reported a “double mutant” variant called B.1.617 that is believed to be more transmissible than the conventional Covid-19.

According to Johns Hopkins University data, India recorded a total of 16.9 million confirmed Covid-19 cases as of April 26.

The Philippine government has imposed an entry ban on foreigners until April 30.
