Poder nila yan! Duterte to respect Congress’ power to revoke EO reducing pork tariffs

By Prince Golez

President Rodrigo Duterte will respect the decision of Congress should it revoke his executive order temporarily lowering tariff rates for imported pork meat, his spokesman said.

On Monday, Palace Spokesman Harry Roque said it is within congressional jurisdiction to reverse Duterte’s order that reduced tariffs on pork imports.

“Nakikinig naman po ang Presidente. Alam naman po ni Presidente na sa ating Saligang Batas ang talagang merong primary jurisdiction pagdating sa taripa ay ang Kongreso,” Roque said during his televised briefing.

“So, kung magdedesisyon ang Kongreso natin, ang Senado at Kamara, na talagang bawiin yung executive order ng ating Presidente, yan naman po ay saklaw ng kapangyarihan ng Kongreso at rerespetuhin po yan ng ating Presidente,” he also said.

Meanwhile, Roque answered in the affirmative when asked if Agriculture Secretary William Dar still enjoys the President’s trust and confidence despite giving him the wrong advice.

“Mukha pong meron pa talagang kumpyansa si Presidente kasi pinaniwalaan niya ang advice ni Secretary Dar na salungat doon sa panindigan ng ating mga senador,” according to him.

“Pero kung tama man o mali si Secretary Dar, ang Saligang Batas naman po ang nagsasabi na talagang poder ng Kongreso yang tariff fixing,” he added.
