All-out offensive against local militants ‘bloody, sad’, Duterte warns

By Prince Golez

President Rodrigo Duterte said he cannot wage a war against his fellow Filipinos.

In a speech at Camp B. Gen. Gonzalo H. Siongco in Awang, Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao, Duterte said he was avoiding a situation that could make things “go out of control.”

The Chief Executive headed to the Bangsamoro province Tuesday, days after members of the extremist Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters stormed the town of Datu Paglas.

“The violence is very much present. Nakikiusap ako because, you know, the government cannot wage a war against his own people. Hindi talaga puwede ‘yan,” he said.

Duterte also sought a peace resolution of armed conflicts to prevent an “all-out” offensive against the extremist groups, which, according to him, would be “bloody” and “sad.”

“Ayaw kong pumatay ng Muslim, ayaw kong pumatay ng Kristiyanos, gusto kong manahimik ang buhay natin sa mundong ito. You know, we live only once.

“If you die, you go to Allah, fine. But in the meantime dito sa buhay ka, magtiis tayo na ganito? There is heaven with Allah. But in the meantime, do we have to create hell dito sa lupa?” the President added.
