Backer niya China! Bayan Muna alarmed by Dennis Uy’s control of Malampaya gas field

By Billy Begas

Bayan Muna chairperson Neri Colmenares on Sunday raised the alarm over China’s alleged expanding control in the West Philippine Sea after “China-backed” Dennis Uy controlled 90% of Malampaya.

“These developments are quite alarming as more and more of our strategic utilities and resources now have an unprecedented control by China. First, there is their control of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) in our energy sector, then the entry of Dito Telecommunity on our telecommunications and internet. Now this in Malampaya which gives a significant power source for our country through natural gas. We are not even counting the numerous incursions China has done in the West Philippine Sea and setting up military installations in our islands,” Colmenares said in a statement.

Colmenares also supported the concern of Senator Sherwin Gatchalian that the Senate and the House of Representatives should look into the technical, financial and operational issues of Malampaya.

“China poses a threat to the Philippines not only through its control of the energy grid, natural gas but even in the telecommunications sector. China Telecoms has at least 40% ownership of DITO Telecommunity consortium to operate as the third telco. Considering that we have a dispute with China because of its rapacious expansionism in the WPS and its trampling of our sovereign rights, it is absurd for the Philippines to give it control of our telecommunications system as well as other strategic assets of our country,” Colmenares added.

Colmenares said the “China is not a friend” and “If we allow it to control our energy and telecommunications sector, we could become its province some day.”
