President Rodrigo Duterte said he will not allow other countries to exploit Benham Rise.
Benham Rise, a 13-million-hectare underwater plateau located near Aurora, is exclusively Philippine property, Duterte said during his recent public address.
He added that he would not allow any foreign intrusion in the area except for innocent passage of foreign vessels.
“I have made it clear to all, to the world, that I will not allow any intrusion there. Well, of course, the right to innocent passage is everybody’s privilege,” country’s chief executive said.
“But to allow anybody, even to just try to exploit or to even to look in, you know, I will not allow them to do that because the Philippine Rise belongs to the Filipino people,” he added.
Duterte made the statement after former Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile, who was a guest in the May 17 “Talk to the People,” suggested that the government exploit the area using resources from economic dealing with China.
