Duterte increases MAV for pork imports to 254,210 metric tons

By Prince Golez

President Rodrigo Duterte has signed an executive order (EO) increasing the minimum access volume (MAV) for pork imports from 54,000 metric tons (MT) to 254,210 MT this year.

This aims to stem the existing pork supply shortage, rising prices, and temper inflation, said Duterte in issuing EO No. 133.

“It is imperative to immediately address the current supply gap in pork meat, to provide consumers with adequate and affordable food, and to lower inflation,” the country’s chief executive said.

The EO directed the MAV Management Committee to ensure that the allocation of the volume importation is “fair and open” to all qualified importers of pork meat, and in accordance with existing rules and regulations for the implementation of the agricultural MAVs, and other pertinent laws and regulations.

Duterte signed EO No. 133 last May 10, 2021.
