The police have the authority to apprehend people who are improperly wearing their face mask, Malacañang said.
Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said cops are allowed to make warrantless arrests for individuals who don’t use masks correctly.
“May karapatan ang pulis na mag-apprehend kapag sila mismo ay nakakita o naging testigo sa paglabag ng batas or ordinansa,” Roque said during his televised briefing Thursday.
“At ang paglabag sa ating mga minimum health protocols, dahil mayroon tayong ordinansang nagpapatupad niyan ay nagbibigay-daan para nga magkaroon ng outright apprehension, warrantless arrest dahil a crime was committed in the presence and with the full personal knowledge of the police officer,” he explained.
Last Wednesday, President Rodrigo Duterte ordered the Philippine National Police to arrest, detain, and investigate those who fail to appropriately wear face coverings.
