President Rodrigo Duterte and Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra have been asked to release the imprisoned wife and son of late political prisoner Jesus Alegre.
In a letter addressed to Duterte and Guevarra dated June 24, San Carlos Bishop Gerardo Almanza appealed I “for Executive Clemency for Morita and her son Selman, or for the review of their conviction, and that they be set free.”
”I appeal that love, compassion and justice be extended to widowed Morita and her son Selman. Please release them and give them their freedom,” he urged.
The bishop said Alegre died at age 75 after being jailed for 16 years following his convicted over trumped up charges of murder.
“But his widow and son, both unjustly convicted and imprisoned for the last 16 years, continue to languish and suffer in separate jails,” he lamented.
Meanwhile, Almanza asked that Morita and Selman be allowed to attend the the funeral of Alegre in Sagay, Negros Occidental this June 30.
