Decongesting prisons at warp speed: BuCor frees 300 inmates in June

Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) Director General Gerald Bantag has released almost 300 persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) during the first half of the month as part of the agency’s ongoing efforts to decongest its prisons.

“In line with the directive of Usec. Gerald Q. Bantago decongest the prison facilities under the Bureau of Corrections, the Inmate Documents and Processing Division, headed by CSInsp. Raul B Sinadjan Jr, was able to process a grand total of Two Hundred Eighty-Six (286) PDL releases for the period covering June 1-15, 2021,” the Bucor said in a statement.

“Said releases of Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL) was through parole, acquittals, maximum expiration of service of sentence and the application of RA 10592 ( GCTA law),” it noted.

Those released include 28 who were granted parole, 77 who got acquitted, 17 who finished the maximum service of their sentence, 153 who were released early due to their GCTA, and 11 returnees.

Most of those released came from the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City with 180.

The other released inmates came from the Correctional institute for Women (CIW) in Mandaluyong City with 43, Davao Prison and Penal Farm (DPPF) with 35, Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm (IPPF) with two, Sablayan Prison and Penal Farm (SPPF) with 12, San Ramon Prison and Penal Farm (SRPPF) with 11, and Leyte Regional Prison (LRP) with three.

Meanwhile, the BuCor said “there are 111 PDL who are due for release-whose carpeta and prison records are under careful review and evaluation by the Pre-release Unit.”

“If there are no other legal causes for their further detention, release papers shall be processed for approval of the Director-General,” it assured.
