The use of face shields to stop the spread of Covid-19 is based on science, Malacañang once again said.

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque made the statement after Senate President Vicente Sotto III filed a resolution seeking an investigation into the efficacy of face shields against Covid-19.

“Iyan po ang sinasabi ng siyensya, iyan po ang sinasabi ng mga dalubhasa. Napakahirap naman pong balewalain na ang sinasabi ng mga nangungunang mga dalubhasa sa larangan po ng medisina at epidemiology,” Roque said during his virtual presser Thursday.

He also cited a study by The Lancet, a world-leading medical journal, saying that the use of face masks prevents Covid-19 transmission.

“Sabi nila, ang pagsusuot ng face shield 78 percent protection in infections tapos kapag sinamahan pa ng use of mask, it results in 85 percent protection at tapos kapag mayroon pang 1 meter distancing, a risk reduction of 80 percent. Tapos kung with every additional 1 meter of separation, more than doubling the relative protection,” according to him.

On Monday, President Rodrigo Duterte decided to require the wearing of face shields in any setting, indoors or outdoors. He made the statement five days after he agreed that face shields should only be worn in hospitals.
