Probationary kasi: 1,000 senior HS teachers to lose jobs unless licensure exams are suspended

By Billy Begas

House Assistant Minority Leader and ACT Teachers Rep. France Castro has called for the suspension of the licensure examination for senior high school teachers.

Castro said under the Enhanced Basic Education Act, senior high school teachers need to pass the teacher’s licensure examination within five years from the date of hiring.

“There are more than 1,000 senior high school teachers who will lose their job starting May 31, 2021, due to the lapse of the 5 years’ timeline for license. These teachers were hired on probationary status since 2016 and failed to comply with the license requirement. Even teachers who are holders of other licenses are still required to secure a professional teacher license to be considered as regular permanent status,” Castro explained.

The lady solon pointed out that many senior high school teachers have failed to take the licensure exam due to the postponement of the Licensure Examination for Professional Teachers scheduled last March 2020, September 2020 and March 2021.

“There is still no certainty that the LEPT will push through on its scheduled September 26, 2021, due to the still ongoing COVID-19 pandemic,” Castro said.

Castro said the Department of Education (DepEd) should use the Bayanihan to Heal As One (Bayanihan 1) as basis to suspend the licensure exam requirement.

“It is not the teacher’s fault that the LEPT exams have been postponed, thus they should not be punished for not being able to comply with the requirements of their probationary status,” she pointed out.

Castro said Congress can also act to suspend this requirement.
