Panelo says Pacquiao upset after failing to get Duterte’s endorsement of 2022 bid

Apart from his long-time dream to become president, Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo sees another reason behind Senator Manny Pacquiao’s recent criticisms against the administration.

Panelo said Pacquiao sought President Rodrigo Duterte’s blessing to run for president and failed.

“‘Yun ang naging reaksyon niya, bumabanat,” Panelo said on Politiskoop.

This confirms an earlier report from Politiko stating that Pacquiao personally met with the President last March and was turned down when he asked for his endorsement for the 2022 national elections.

“Tinanong ko si President eh. Sabi niya, ‘inadvise ko ‘wag ka na tumakbo, pero kung gusto mo talaga tumakbo ‘wag kang gumastos ng pera mo,’ ‘yon ang sabi niya sa kanya,” Panelo said.

A word war between President Duterte and Pacquiao recently erupted after the senator alleged that corruption worsened in the current administration.

Earlier in his term, President Duterte expressed support for Pacquiao’s potential bid for the presidency.

His supporters are now batting for either his daughter Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte or Senator Bong Go to succeed him.
