Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat denied claims that the surge of COVID-19 cases currently being experienced in the country right now was due to the opening of the tourism sector.
“Actually, I can really say hindi po ‘yan totoo,” Puyat said in an interview on Abante’s Balitaan at Kumustahan on Wednesday.
She explained that before they formally open a tourist destination, they talked to the local government units (LGU) that sought negative RT-PCR tests.
Citing an example, Puyat said when Baguio sees a rise in COVID-19 cases, she would call Mayor Benjamin Magalong to ask if it was because of tourism activities. Magalong, she said, would say that it was not due to the tourism opening, and they also do the same for other areas.
“Kasi kaya natin dapat malaman if it’s because of tourism para ma-check natin kung ano yung dapat gawin natin, pero nagpapasalamat kami na it’s not because of tourism kasi lahat ng mga turista na pumupunta ay may negative RT-PCR, at istrikto tayo doon,” she said.
