Double pay sana! Colmenares to Duterte gov’t: Treat health frontliners as heroes, not beggars

The country’s health workers deserve respect, support, and higher pay especially as they battle the pandemic on the frontlines.

Former Bayan Muna Rep. Neri Colmenares made the statement in paying tribute to the health frontliners during the observance of National Heroes Day in the county.

“We should treat our medical frontliners as heroes, not beggars. Isang friendly reminder ngayong National Heroes Day,” he tweeted.

He said giving the benefits of health workers on time is “not just their right,” insisting they deserve government support. “A well supported workforce is key to making the health system work and striving the pandemic,” he said.

Colmenares also backed proposals to raise the salary of the government health workers, similar to the bigger pay granted by President Duterte to policemen and soldiers.

“Sana nga naman all. Our health workers are our unsung heroes during this pandemic. Let’s give them the support and appreciation they very much deserve,” he said.

A group of health workers from private and government hospitals earlier called on the government to give the delayed benefits, including risk allowance, due them under the Bayanihan law. The health frontliners are considered essential in the COVID fight but have become overworked amid the country’s surging coronavirus cases.
