Guevarra tells BuCor, BJMP: Ensure inmates are vaccinated vs COVID-19

Prison facilities should make sure that inmates get vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus, Department of Justice (DOJ) Secretary Menardo Guevarra said on Monday (Aug. 30).

“BUCOR (Bureau of Corrections) and BJMP (Bureau of Jail Management and Penology) authorities are duty-bound to make proper coordination with local health officers in the places where jails and prisons are located,” he said.

“If the LGUs (local government units) concerned cannot provide enough for them, then the BUCOR and the BJMP should seek their own independent sources,” he advised.

Guevarra made the statement as the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) appealed for more persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) getting vaccinated.

“As for the general population of PDLs, the DOJ has batted for their inclusion in priority 4 if only for the reason that their space limitation makes them more vulnerable to community transmission of the disease,” he said.

“We hope that with the arrival of more vaccines in the coming days, sufficient quantities could be set aside for PDLs at risk,” he added.
