Palace ‘processing’ P500K cash aid for Onyok Velasco

By Prince Golez

The Office of the President is currently “processing” the provision of P500,000 cash aid to 1996 Olympic silver medalist Mansueto “Onyok” Velasco, a press statement released by Senator Christopher “Bong” Go said.

This, after Velasco revealed that he has yet to receive the P2.5 million pledge from certain members of the House of Representatives then, as well as scholarship grants for his children from another pledger.

An unnamed businessman had also committed to provide the 47-year-old boxer a lifetime monthly allowance of P10,000, but was discontinued after a year.

“Nakapagdala po ng honor si Onyok sa ating bansa. Napaglipasan lang po ng panahon ang ibang mga ipinangako sa kaniya. Kaya po ako nakikiusap sa gobyerno na mabigyan siya ng konting tulong bilang pagkilala rin sa kanyang accomplishment noon,” said Go, also chairperson of the Senate Committee on Sports.

On August 5, Malacañang said it would look into the possibility of giving an incentive to Velasco, who won a silver medal the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
