A former lawmaker has appealed to the government to let the private sector buy their own coronavirus vaccines before the pandemic worsens in the country.
Former Senator JV Ejercito made the appeal for the private sector-led vaccine purchase in order to hasten the vaccination of more Filipinos. More people get vaccinated, the better they are protected from the dreaded illness.
Ejercito, concerned about the rising COVID-19 cases in the country, admitted that he already lost three friends to the coronavirus in the past month.
“Handling of COVID in the Philippines is getting out of control according to WHO. Let us allow private entities to import their own vaccines to speed things up in the inoculation process!” he tweeted.
Any vaccine purchase currently requires the consent of the Philippine government since these drugs only have emergency use approval during the health crisis. Any private company or local government unit planning to buy vaccines must secure a tripartite deal with the national government and the foreign supplier first.
The country’s vaccine supply is mostly stocks purchased by the national government and those donated by foreign governments.
As of Sept. 14, 2021, the Philippines has 177,670 active cases of coronavirus after authorities recorded an additional 18,056 cases. The country has so far logged 2.26 million COVID-19 cases, including 35,529 deaths.
