‘Ang bait ng Amerika’: Duterte mulls ‘thank you’ visit to United States over vaccine donation

President Duterte is changing his previous stance against visiting the United States.

Duterte is now willing to travel to the United States just to thank Washington for the coronavirus vaccines donated to the Philippines. The country is set to receive additional 5 million doses of vaccines from the US, he said.

“May mga bakuna man tayo, may dumating. Kasasabi lang ni — ni Secretary (Carlito) Galvez pati Secretary (Francisco) Duque na ang Amerika nagbigay bago, 5 million? Ang bait ng Amerika. Baka pupunta ako doon just to thank the American government and the people. Ano — ano na bang itsura ng Amerika?” Duterte said in his latest public address.

Before planning his US visit, Duterte has been holding a grudge against America for allegedly meddling in the country’s affairs and treating its defense poorly. He vowed never to visit the United States.

The Philippines has so far administered 45 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines from the supply of 71 million delivered. Most of the country’s vaccine stocks are purchased by the government and donated through the World Health Organization-led COVAX facility.
