Palace thanks Enrile for remark vs ICC drug war probe: He’s full of wisdom

Malacañang has welcomed the call of former Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile to prohibit the International Criminal Court (ICC) probers from entering the Philippines and to declare them persona non grata.

The ICC earlier authorized a formal investigation into alleged crimes against humanity committed in President Rodrigo Duterte’s war on drugs.

“Maraming salamat po kay dating Senate President Enrile. Talaga namang he’s full of wisdom,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said during a televised briefing Monday.

Roque also reiterated that the Philippines does not need to cooperate with the ICC because the country is no longer a party to the court’s Rome Statute.

“Pero ang panindigan ng Pilipinas, dahil hindi tayo kasapi sa Rome Statue ng International Criminal Court, wala tayong obligasyon na makipag-cooperate ngayon,” according to him.

“Hindi pupwede na dalawang estado ang mag-e-exercise ng hurisdiksyon at ng soberenya. Exclusive po ang pag exercise ng hursidiksyon at soberenya. ‘Yan ang dahilan kung bakit hindi pupwedeng mag imbestiga ang mga dayuhan sa mga krimen na nangyari dito sa ating bayan,” he added.
