Sotto defends Senate inquiries: ‘Knowing the truth never brought harm to nation’

What’s wrong with trying to find out the truth?

Senate President Tito Sotto came to the defense of the Senate and its investigations in aid of legislation following the criticisms hurled by President Duterte.

Duterte, annoyed by the Senate inquiry into the government’s alleged overpriced medical supplies, had said congressional investigation often lead to nowhere. He also directed Cabinet members to secure his clearance before attending such inquiries, saying he will prevent them if the inquiry’s purpose is only to harass and berate them in public.

“Investigating and knowing the truth never brought any harm to a nation,” Sotto tweeted.

In these congressional investigations, Sotto said the senators probe and recommend but do not prosecute. The task of prosecution of personalities involved lies with the executive branch and the Office of the Ombudsman, he said.

“Senators are not prosecutors. We simply ask questions and recommend. The executive and the Ombudsman prosecute, not us,” he said.
