2022 alliance in the making? Sara Duterte meets Bongbong Marcos in Cebu

Davao City Sara Duterte Carpio met with former Senator Bongbong Marcos while they were both visiting Cebu province Saturday, fueling speculations of a potential alliance next year.

The chance encounter happened while the two politikos attended a birthday gathering for Rep. Yedda Marie Romualdez, wife of House Majority Leader Martin Romualdez. Bongbong and Martin are cousins.

No less than the President’s daughter confirmed on social media about her meeting with Marcos in Cebu.

“Confirmed po na nagkita kami ngayon lang ni Presidential aspirant at former Senator BBM sa masayang pagdiriwang ng birthday ni Cong. Yedda, maybahay ni House Majority Leader Martin Romualdez sa Cebu,” the Davao City mayor said in a Facebook post on October 23, 2021.

The meeting between the two politikos occurred amid mounting calls for Mayor Sara to run for president in the 2022 elections. The President’s daughter earlier decided to seek a third and final term as Davao City mayor in the elections but pleas from supporters to seek a presidential run continued.

Mayor Sara has topped recent surveys of preferred presidential contenders, followed by Marcos. The former senator, a known ally of the Dutertes, launched a presidential bid for the first time since his father’s ouster from office via the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution.

In her Cebu trip, Mayor Sara also had a meeting with Bongbong’s sister, Senator Imee Marcos, thanking her for the continued support.

“Manang Imee kumusta ka na? Maraming salamat sa pagbisita at suporta palagi,” she said.

Mayor Sara arrived in Cebu City on Friday, wearing a green hoodie with the message “SARA ALL 2022.” Wearing such political statement triggered speculations if she is reconsidering her 2022 plans.
