Malacañang assured Filipinos on Tuesday that President Rodrigo Duterte continues to uphold freedom of speech.
“The President believes in freedom of speech and free marketplace of ideas, and he has demonstrated this in his entire public career,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in a statement.
Roque also noted that Duterte has never filed libel cases against his critics.
“The President simply focuses on his work with the welfare of the Filipinos foremost in his mind,” he added.
The Palace official was reacting to the June 23 to 26 Social Weather Stations report that 45 percent of 1,200 Filipinos agreed that they can speak “openly and without fear, even if it is against President Duterte.”
Only 27 percent expressed fear to speak freely against Duterte, while the other 27 were undecided.
