Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte Carpio wants to complete her term as Davao City mayor in next year’s elections before seeking higher public office.

Mayor Sara admitted her decision was difficult amid the clamor of her supporters to seek the presidency in the 2022 elections. The mayor however said public service can still be rendered without being the president.

The President’s daughter recently filed her certificate of candidacy to seek a third and final term as mayor of Davao City despite pleas from allies and supporters join the presidential race.

“Masakit din para sa aking damdamin na sana’y magpaubaya sa mga kaibigan na hindi ko maibigay ang gusto ninyo. Gusto ko po sana tapusin muna ang huli kong termino sa Mayor bago ako manungkulan sa ibang position,” she said on Facebook.

Mayor Sara is aware that many are hurt and even lost hope following her decision to steer away from the presidential contest. But she said people can still help each other even without having a government post, including the presidency.

“Madami sa inyo ang nasasaktan, sumama ang loob at nawalan ng pag-asa pero puwede pa rin tayo magtulungan para sa ating bayan, di kailangan ng position, di kailangan ng tayo ay Pangulo upang makatulong. Gawin natin ang pagtulong sa kapwa sa araw-araw natin na pamumuhay. Maraming Salamat po,” she said.

Many groups have been trying to convince Mayor Sara to run for president in the 2022 elections with some supporters launching feeding programs, medical missions, creating songs and videos, and even launching prayer vigils.

The mayor has repeatedly thanked these groups for their trust and support. She remains the frontrunner in recent surveys of preferred presidential contenders.

She earlier balked from running for the country’s top office, citing an agreement with her father President Duterte that only one of them should seek national office.

Recently, Duterte dropped out of the vice presidential contest and announced plans to retire from politics. Duterte, who ends his six-year term next year, later endorsed his daughter as president with his aide Senator Bong Go as running mate.
