Bill allowing married women to keep maiden surnames approved by House panel

The House Committee on Revision of Laws has endorsed for plenary approval a measure that will allow married women to retain their maiden surnames.

House Bill 10459 seeks to amend the Civil Service Code of the Philippines (Republic Act 386).

At present, a married woman may use her maiden first name and surname and add her husband’s surname. Use her maiden first name and her husband’s surname or her husband’s full name but prefixing a word indicating that she is his wife, such as “Mrs.”

Under the proposal, a provision, which will allow married women to use their maiden first name and surname will be inserted in the law.

The objective of the measure is to “provide for equality between men and women before the law” by upholding the right of married women to retain their maiden surnames even after marriage.
