Duterte mulls requiring Covid-19 vaccines: ‘I can compel you’

By Prince Golez

President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday expressed his support for a mandatory vaccination against Covid-19.

In a taped public address, Duterte said he would favor a mandatory Covid-19 vaccination policy should the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases call for it.

“As a worker of government also in charge of the overall operation of the government, I may agree with the Task Force if they decide to make it mandatory. It’s for public health,” according to the Chief Executive.

“‘Yung ayaw magpabakuna, madali lang man ‘yan, mamili ka: matagal kang mabuhay o gusto mo nang mamatay?… If the Task Force would decide to make it mandatory, ah mamili kayo,” he also said.

Duterte said that it is within the police power of a State to make vaccination mandatory.

“Government can issue measures that would protect public health, public safety, public order, it’s in the police state, naka-ano ‘yan sa category police state… Under the police power of the state, I can compel you,” he added.
