Lacson vows to end ‘greed’ in government projects

Partido Reporma chairman and standard-bearer Panfilo “Ping” Lacson has repeated his vow to end corruption in government projects, where up to 40 percent of the costs are lost “depending on the greed of those who implement them,” once he is voted President in the 2022 national elections.

Lacson promised to bring down the decades-old system of graft perpetuated by government officials as he noted that even as the national debt has ballooned to P11.9 trillion, Filipinos still are not benefitting from the projects these funds are supposed to be earmarked for.

“Nag-i-implementa ng proyekto ng gobyerno, halimbawa, sampung milyon ang isang proyekto, e hindi naman sampung milyon ang pumapasok doon sa proyekto. Nababawasan ng 20%, 30% minsan 40% depende na sa kasibaan, sa katakawan ng nag-i-implementa,” he said in Partido Reporma’s “Online Kumustahan” on Saturday from San Rafael, Bulacan.

[For example, the government implements a project worth ten million (pesos), but not all ten million goes into the project. It is reduced by 20%, 30%, sometimes 40% depending on the greed, the gluttony of those implementing it.]

About P320 billion in funds annually are unused from the borrowings of the government that should be going to investment, infrastructure, and livelihood projects, noted the veteran senator who has watched the nation’s coffers for nearly 18 years.

“Luminga kayo sa ating paligid…lalo na kapag napunta kayo sa mga liblib sa mga kanayunan. Saan napunta ‘yung taon-taon na budget natin?” the longtime public servant said in the gathering at Tambubong Elementary School, which was livestreamed to nine other sites across Bulacan province.

[Just look around you… especially when you go to the remote villages. Where is our (national) budget going every year?]

Compounding the problem is the neglect and incompetence of the government that Lacson said should not be taken for granted by Filipinos.

“Alam niyo kapag hindi na tayo nagagalit, nagtatawa na lang tayo sa mga kalokohang nakikita natin, parang ang laki na ng problema natin. Parang hinahayaan na lang natin ‘bahala na, talagang ganyan ang kalakaran’ parang mali,” pahayag ni Lacson.

[You know, if we don’t get mad, and just laugh at the anomalies we see, it looks like we have a huge problem. It’s like we’re letting them get away with it, ‘that’s just how the system is,’ which I think is wrong.]

The former national police chief vowed to end this system of graft and theft of Filipinos’ taxes when he and his running mate, Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III, are voted into office after the May 9, 2022 polls and lead the country for the next six years

“Ginagawa na namin, gagawin pa namin nang lubusan pa [We are already doing it, and we will do even more],” Lacson said.
