President Rodrigo Duterte hasn’t run out of moves just yet as a kingmaker even with the perceived withdrawal of Senator Bong Go as a presidential candidate.

Former chief presidential legal counsel Salvador Panelo told One News’ “The Chiefs” Wednesday (December 8) that Duterte may endorse a presidential aspirant soon.

“I talked with the President last night, ang sabi niya sa akin eh para sa mga nagtatanong, maghintay lang because meron yata siyang bagong kandidato,” Panelo said.

The former Cabinet official said Duterte did not elaborate on the presidential bet he’s eyeing to endorse.

However, Panelo said Duterte’s anointed candidate could come from PDP-Laban, which currently lacks a standard bearer.

He said the Commission on Elections can extend the deadline for substitution of candidates.

“The fixing of the filing of substitution, yung deadline, sabi ng Supreme Court, the Comelec has yung authority only because of the printing [of ballots],” Panelo explained.

“So the Comelec can move that kasi parang unfair naman sa isang party if you deprive it [of] representation,” he added.

Panelo said Duterte doesn’t seem keen on endorsing a presidential aspirant from among the politikos running now, even Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Manila Mayor Isko Moreno, who are perceived to benefit from Go’s withdrawal from the race.

Asked the possible extension of the substitution period won’t be akin to putting pressure on the Comelec, Panelo said: “When you say a particular office has the authority, then you don’t need the pressure for that.”

Pressed on what Duterte plans to do if the Comelec doesn’t extend the substitution period, Panelo replied: “Na kay Presidente na ‘yan.”
