Government officials in the Philippines should follow the example set by former Japanese Prime Minister who stepped down due to his worsening health, former solicitor general Florin Hilbay said.
“Shinzo Abe, Japan’s longest-serving leader, resigns over health issues,” read his Twitter post.
“By doing so, he recognizes that a leader’s health is tied to the nation’s well-being. Illness affects the leader’s judgment, market confidence, long-term planning, etc,” he explained.
Hilbay said what Abe’s resignation is a “great example for others to follow.”
This week, Abe resigned due to his ongoing battle for ulcerative colitis.
“I cannot be prime minister if I cannot make the best decisions for the people. I have decided to step down from my post,” Abe recently stated.
