Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra has asked the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to scrutinize the state of health of former Ozamiz City councilor Ricardo Parojinog and his sister Melodina Parojinog Malingin, both of whom died while under custody.
“It’s about the state of their health prior to their deaths,” Guevarra said on Monday (Sept. 7).
Last Friday (Sept. 40), Ricardo was found dead in his cell at the Ozamiz City police.
“I have already discussed this matter with OIC chief Distor (NBI Director Eric Distor),” Guevarra said regarding the death of Ricardo.
“We agreed to let our field operatives do some initial fact-checking,” he added.
Following Ricardo’s death, sister Melodina, who has been detained since 2017 over drug charges, died on Sunday (Sept. 6) at the MHARS Medical Center in Ozamiz City.
“As to another Parojinog sibling dying in jail, I will ask the NBI to include it in their preliminary inquiry,” Guevarra said.
The two Parojinogs are the siblings of former Ozamiz City mayor Reynaldo Parojinog Jr. whose family has been tagged by President Rodrigo Duterte to the illegal drugs trade.
The former mayor were among 14 persons including his wife who were killed during police operations conducted back in 2017.
