Justice for Jennifer Laude.
Former Senator Bam Aquino has slammed President Duterte’s decision to grant pardon an American soldier convicted of killing Laude, a transgender woman, in 2014.
The former senator decried the lack of justice for Laude after US soldier Joseph Scott Pemberton will walk free due to the presidential pardon.
“Ang murder naging homicide. Ang life imprisonment naging 6 to 12 years. Ang kulungan naging facility.’ Ngayon, ang krimen at parusa, binura,” he tweeted.
“Nasaan ang hustisya kung ang mga kapwa Pilipino ang nangangailangan nito?” he added.
The President pulled a surprise on the nation when he pardoned Pemberton over alleged unfair treatment. Duterte said Pemberton deserved a good conduct presumption after his jailers did not keep a record of his detention. He said no one can question the pardon granted to the US solider.
In 2015, Pemberton, 25, was sentenced to jail for 10 years for the death of Laude. An Olongapo City court however ordered his early release for good conduct in detention. The US soldier has spent less than six years in a special facility inside Camp Aguinaldo.
