Brave and bold! Lacson, Sotto lauded for stand vs e-sabong

Television host Cito Beltran has praised the tandem of Senators Panfilo Lacson and Vicente Sotto III for speaking out against online gambling, particularly e-sabong, which has been blamed for societal ills amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

In his December 2 column for the Philippine Star, Beltran said Lacson and Sotto have expressed concern over Filipinos’ growing addiction to online gambling.

Lacson, who’s running for president, even shared the story of a father who committed suicide after racking up P600,000 in debts due to online sabong.

“I am glad that Senators Ping Lacson and Tito Sotto have taken on an issue that hundreds of thousands of Filipinos have been critical of but have not found a voice. They are the first; God willing, they won’t be the last!” Beltran said.

To bolster the campaign against e-sabong, Beltran suggested that Lacson and Sotto talk to stakeholders, the Department of Interior and Local Government and the Games and Amusement Board to institute a monitoring system to avoid corruption in its operations.

At present, Beltran said the two senators are studying whether Congress is authorized to issue a franchise to e-sabong operators since the game is not a public utility or media outlet.
