Senator Manny Pacquiao will shoulder the operating costs for broadcasting the Department of Education’s (DepEd) learning programs on the 13 channels that the government will use for distance learning.
In a statement Monday (September 14), Pacquiao said he arranged for DepEd to use 13 channels for its programs– at no expense to the government or students. He said a proposal has been submitted to the agency.
Former Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) General Manager Thomas Orbos, who heads Pacquiao’s program, said the government will shell out millions of pesos if DepEd broadcasts its programs on 13 channels nationwide for eight hours daily, 20 days a month.
“In our case, our satellite transmission is at the disposal of the senator for the project covering utilizing our excess bandwidth. His (Pacquiao’s) friends are helping out shouldering other costs,” Orbos said in a text message.
DepEd has rolled out television programs for students as part of blended learning since there will be no face-to-face classes anytime soon.
Pacquiao’s announcement came days after the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) recalled the television and radio channels assigned to ABS-CBN following its failure to obtain a new franchise.
