Tapos na intriga! Guevarra relieved Pemberton out of PH

Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra has expressed relief now that United States Marine Joseph Scott Pemberton has left the country.

“I am relieved to see the end of the Pemberton episode,” he said.

“Though attended with intense conflict, it has provided valuable insights and lessons to ponder on regarding the future of the Visiting Forces Agreement, the administration of criminal justice, and the exercise of the President’s constitutional powers,” Guevarra added.

Pemberton left at around 9:14 a.m. Sunday (Sept. 13) aboard a military aircraft at the at the Ninoy International Airport (NAIA) after having been given absolute pardon by President Rodrigo Duterte amid opposition from the family of slain transgender Jennifer Laude.

The US serviceman was convicted in 2015 for the 2014 killing of Laude and, prior the absolute pardon, the family had tried blocking the Olongapo City court’s order that granted his motion for early release due to his accumulated good conduct time allowance (GCTA).

Since his conviction, Pemberton served his time at the detention facility of Joint US Military Assistance Group (JUSMAG) in Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City after invoking the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA).
