The filing of charges against corrupt officials of the Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth) validates the Senate’s oversight function, Sen. Panfilo Lacson said Wednesday.
Lacson noted most of the evidence used by the National Bureau of Investigation and Department of Justice, which filed the charges, came from the Senate.
“This is one good reason why the Senate must keep going in performing our oversight function as our collective responsibility to the People of the Philippines,” he said in a statement.
“Modesty aside, most of the pieces of evidence used by the NBI were culled from the materials that we submitted to the DOJ,” he added.
He was referring to the findings of the Senate Committee of the Whole when it conducted hearings on anomalies at the state insurer.
During the hearings, Lacson bared evidence that some PhilHealth officials twisted the implementation of the Interim Reimbursement Mechanism, overpriced IT equipment, and doctored the agency’s financial records.
Earlier this week, the NBI lodged graft charges against PhilHealth officials including ex-chief Ricardo Morales before the Ombudsman for violation of the Anti-Graft Law.
Lacson expressed hopes the case reaches its “logical conclusion,” to make the concerned officials accountable.
“We can only hope that this case reaches its logical conclusion to make all those who, without a shred of conscience in their bones, took advantage of a deadly virus to fleece government of funds intended to respond to an unprecedented health crisis that we continue to grapple with,” he said.
“That said, there is more reason that we should trust DOJ Secretary Menardo Guevarra and his people at the DOJ and NBI,” he added.
