Senator Francis Pangilinan expressed concern over Senator Leila De Lima’s condition Saturday (April 24) after she possibly had a mild stroke.
In a statement, Pangilinan said he is praying for De Lima’s speedy recovery. The opposition senator is currently in a hospital after two Muntinlupa courts granted her request for an emergency medical furlough.
“We know Sen. Leila is a strong woman — an oragon through and through, and we believe she can recover so long as she’s given the urgent medical attention not easily accessible for persons deprived of liberty,” Pangilinan said.
“Over 1,500 days of unjust detention will take its toll on anyone — and now it’s affected Sen. Leila’s health. This is a severe injustice and a violation of basic human rights,” he added.
Pangilinan reiterated the appeal for De Lima to be freed, saying the drug charges she is facing are false.
De Lima sought a medical furlough after experiencing “bouts of headaches and persistent generalized weakness.”
Both Judge Liezel Aquiatan of Br. 205 and Judge Romeo Buenaventura of Br. 256 granted De Lima’s Very Urgent Motion for Medical Furlough on April 23 for “health and humanitarian” reasons.
De Lima will be staying at Manila Doctor’s Hospital until April 26.
