Twenty-seven of the 303 Badjaos rescued from trafficking will be released from a COVID-19 virus quarantine facility this Friday (June 18), Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking (IACAT) Executive Director Jinky Dedumo said.
Dedumo said the 27 indigenous people (IPs), including four who tested positive for COVID-19 and their families who have been exposed to them, have been staying at a quarantine facility in Quezon City.
“Sufficient provisions and accommodation are provided and we will make sure that our IP brothers and sisters who can be more exposed to abuse will be protected.,” she assured.
“They will stay in the same facility until June 18,” she revealed.
Dedumo said that the IACAT will also work to bring them back to Mindanao once their quarantine ends.
“We look forward to their reintegration and perhaps return to Mindanao,” she said.
“NCIP (National Commission on Indigenous Peoples) is also working closely with IACAT as regards this matter,” she added
Of the 303 Badjaos rescued by law enforcement last June 4 at the Manila North Harbour Seaport, 232 have already been returned to their homes in Zamboanga.
