As requested by US: Americans with expired passports allowed to leave PH

American who have passports that will expire or already expired this year can leave the country, Bureau of Immigration (BI) Commissioner Jaime Morente said.

Morente explained in a statement that the move was made at the request of the United States Embassy.

“Because of the request from the US Embassy, in principle, passports that expired from January 1, 2020 up to the end of 2021 are considered valid and extended, hence they may be allowed to depart,” said Morente.

“But this rule applies only to departing passengers,” he added.

Morente said Americans who are planning to remain here or convert their visas “still need to present a valid passport.”

Meanwhile, Morente said has already directed the Bureau’s Tourist Visa Section and Alien Registration Division to process all applications for updating of stay, and emigration clearance certificates (ECC) of holders of expired US passports upon presentation of a confirmed ticket bound for the USA.

The BI chief said the US Embassy made the request due to the plight of US citizens who were stranded in the Philippines due to the pandemic and who are unable to leave because their passports have expired.
