Ungkatan ng past! Receipts of insults, red tagging vs Hidilyn Diaz surface as DDS sing different tune

Netizens critical of the Duterte administration are having a field day mining the internet for “receipts” or proof that the President’s supporters elated by Hidilyn Diaz’s Olympic feat previously insulted her.

Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo, as presidential spokesperson in 2019, linked Diaz to an alleged ouster plot against President Rodrigo Duterte.

On Monday (July 27), however, Panelo sang a different tune after Diaz won the Philippines’ first Olympic gold medal after dominating the women’s 55-kilogram weightlifting event.

“Her feat makes us Filipinos proud. Her getting the gold is a testament to the Filipino race’s talent and indefatigable spirit,” Panelo said in a statement.

Netizen Billy Ibarra shared an old photo of Panelo discussing the matrix where Diaz’s name was included in a Facebook post shortly after the Filipina athlete’s victory.

“Memories, gonna bring back memories,” Ibarra quipped.

Screenshots of blogger Mark Lopez’s Facebook post questioning Diaz’s appeal for financial aid for her Olympics journey also surfaced after he cheered the athlete’s feat.

“WTF! Akala ko hirap na hirap na sa training dahil wala na syang pondo? Mukhang hindi pala siya ang hirap,” Lopez said in a June 2019 post. His remark was accompanied by another post of a netizen who claimed Diaz’s boyfriend, who was also her strength and conditioning coach, demanded close to $2,000 in compensation and perks.

Following Diaz’s historic Olympic victory, Lopez said on Facebook: “First ever OLYMPIC GOLD, in the time of DUTERTE! Congratulations Hidilyn! [Philippine flag emoji].”

Netizen Charlie Kogure’s retweet of the Philippine Sports Commission’s post on Diaz’s Olympic victory was also a complete turnaround from his July 7, 2019 tweet bashing the athlete.

“If @diaz_hidilyn is way too demanding, don’t send her to #Tokyo2020. Better not to have an Olympic medal than to produce a primadonna one || And it saves our govt fund made from the taxpayers money || There are more deserving Olympian than her!” Kogure tweeted two years ago.
