No to a Duterte-Duterte tandem in 2022 elections.
It seems this is President Duterte’s sentiment after offering to withdraw from the vice presidential race if his daughter Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte will run for president in next year’s polls.
Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles confirmed that the President made this stipulation during a meeting with government officials last Tuesday, August 24, 2021.
Nograles earlier made a similar confirmation when he was interviewed on CNN Philippines.
“Yes, he said that if Mayor Sara runs then he’s considering not running for vice president,” he told The Source program host Pinky Webb. “He said ‘yung Duterte-Duterte to him and he’s always been consistent diyan, sabi niya pag Duterte-Duterte, he’s not convinced that it should happen at least for this, itong 2022 national elections,” he said.
Duterte, in a televised speech Tuesday night, agreed to run for vice president in next year’s elections, saying he wants to continue his “crusade” against illegal drugs and insurgency. Duterte still has several months left in office before he steps down in June 2022. He is constitutionally prohibited from seeking reelection.
Duterte previously discouraged his daughter from running for president, saying it was not a woman’s job. The Davao City mayor is the frontrunner in recent surveys for potential presidential bets but has yet to decide on her political future.
