Robredo reached out first: Tito Sotto spills tea on efforts to unify opposition

It was Vice President Leni Robredo who made the first move to talk to Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III and Senator Panfilo Lacson about the possibility of fielding a single standard bearer for the opposition in the 2022 elections.

Sotto shared details about efforts to unify the opposition after Robredo said on her radio show Sunday (August 8) that she rejected Lacson’s proposal for fielding a single standard bearer to face the administration’s candidate.

Robredo said Lacson wanted non-administration presidential candidates who filed their certificates of candidacy (COC) in October to withdraw in favor of the politiko who will have the highest pre-election survey rating by a particular period.

In response to a netizen’s tweet on Robredo and Lacson’s version of events, Sotto said it was the Vice President who approached them first.

“Correction, VP approached Ping,” Sotto tweeted.

He shared a screenshot of a text message that a person from Robredo’s office sent to Sotto’s chief of staff.

Part of the text message read: ‘I am texting as well to relay a message from VP Leni. She would like to reach out to SP Sotto and Sen Lacson and consult them regarding the possibility of uniting behind one candidate/one ticket come 2022. She also says that the candidate need not be her as the victory and the unity of ticket for her is paramount.”

Robredo’s staff also told Sotto’s chief of staff that the Vice President was willing to meet with the Senate President and Lacson at a place of their convenience.

Responding to Sotto’s tweet, Lacson said: “Arguing with truth is a losing proposition.”

Robredo said she rejected Lacson’s proposal because she did not want to lead her supporters on should she decide to run for president.

“Kapag nag-file ako, kailangan kong ituloy ang laban. Kapag nag-file ako, hindi ako puwedeng umatras kahit gaano pa kahirap kasi pinresinta ko na iyong sarili ko sa publiko eh,” she said.
