President Rodrigo Duterte has ordered Solicitor General Jose Calida to ask the Commission on Audit (COA) to conduct an audit of the Philippine Red Cross (PRC).
During his second public address this week, Duterte asked Calida to write COA chairman Mike Aguinaldo a letter and ask him to “immediately” scrutinize the PRC’s financial records.
“I am ordering the Solicitor General to write Aguinaldo a letter and ask him to conduct immediately an audit diyan sa Red Cross na ’yan,” the Chief Executive said.
Earlier, Duterte insisted that COA can audit PRC because the humanitarian organization receives public funds from the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. and the Philippines Charity Sweepstakes Office.
He also threatened to cut ties with PRC, whose chairman, Senator Dick Gordon, is leading the Senate inquiry into the procurement of alleged overpriced Covid-19 medical supplies, if it refuses to undergo a state audit.
