Bato ready for presidency: ‘Hindi ako mahihirapan’

His presidential run may be a last-minute decision but this politiko believes he is ready to lead the country.

Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa said his long government track record has prepared him for a presidential bid in the 2022 elections.

Dela Rosa filed his certificate of candidacy for president under the PDP-Laban faction backed by President Duterte. His COC filing came as a surprise to many since he hadn’t previously talked about any presidential ambition.

“You have to take note na ‘yung sinabi ko (noong 2019) na kailangan ko magpa-train dahil nga legislation is a new world for me,” Dela Rosa said in a Facebook post.

“I have been with the executive branch of government my whole life. Bago lang ako nalipat sa legislative. So ito namang pagka-pangulo ay puro execution of laws, more on administration, so I think hindi na ako gaanong mahihirapan. Hindi ako mahihirapan,” he said.

Dela Rosa served as the country’s police chief from 2016 to 2018, leading the government’s controversial war on illegal drugs that drew criticisms for alleged abuses. He was a cop since 1986.

When he retired from the police service, he briefly served as head of the Bureau of Corrections in 2018. A known Duterte ally, Dela Rosa was elected as senator in the 2019 elections.
