Gloria Arroyo comes out of retirement to run for Congress

Unlike President Duterte, former President Gloria Macapagal is yet quitting politics.

Former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo previously declared she was retiring from politics after a three-term stint in Congress ended in 2019. Three years later, the former representative of Pampanga has changed her mind.

Arroyo has decided to seek a return to Congress in the 2022 elections. Her certificate of candidacy for representative of Pampanga’s second district was filed on Monday, October 4, 2021.

The former leader however was not present in the filing of her COO. The deed was done by her eldest son Pampanga Rep. Mikey Arroyo.

The latest update on Arroyo was shared by ABS-CBN reporter RG Cruz on Twitter.

Arroyo served as the country’s president from 2001 to 2009. A year later, she won her congressional bid in her home province of Pampanga. She was later detained at the hospital on corruption charges but released in 2016.

In 2018, Arroyo, a close ally of President Duterte, made a huge political comeback after being elected as Speaker of the House of Representatives.
