Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque made waves on social media after asking a Miss World Philippines candidate if a female presidential aspirant with “very young” children should run for the country’s top post.
Roque served as a judge during the Miss World Philippines 2021 coronation night held at the Subic Bay Exhibition and Convention Center Sunday.
Some netizens criticized the Palace official for using the beauty pageant to push his political agenda while others accused him of sexism.
In response to Roque’s question, Shaila Rebortera of Talisay City, Cebu answered: “In the modern times right now, a woman is strong and brave in different ways. Other women are strong and brave because they sacrifice their career for their family.
“If our candidate would like to pursue becoming a President despite sacrificing time for their family, in exchange of serving the Filipino people, then I would definitely support that.”
Rebortera, a licensed dentist, eventually won Miss Multinational Philippines 2021.
