Bello warns Robredo camp: Running campaign as Aquino/EDSA legacy sequel is ‘suicidal’

Will Vice President Leni Robredo “break with the old” before it is too late?

Former Akbayan representative Walden Bello posed this question to Robredo after warning her camp about the “suicidal” move to focus her 2022 presidential campaign on sustaining the Aquino/EDSA legacy.

Bello, a vice presidential aspirant in next year’s polls, said the challenge for the opposition is “to run not just against a return of the dark Marcos years but against a repeat of the politics of the failed EDSA Republic pre-Duterte.”

Robredo, leader of the opposition, is running for president as an independent bet in the 2022 elections. She embraced pink as new campaign color as she veered away from yellow associated with the Liberal Party. But Robredo has not completely severed ties with LP, retaining her post as party chair and choosing Sen. Kiko Pangilinan, party president, as her running mate.

“I admire Vice President Robredo for her integrity but her campaign staff is running her campaign as a continuation of the Aquino/EDSA legacy, and that’s suicidal in the current political context. Will she have the courage to break with the old before it’s too late for her campaign?” Bello said on Facebook.

Bello talked about the “internecine strife” in the Liberal Party after reading an opinion piece written by Joey Salgado, spokesman of former Vice President Jojo Binay. The former Makati mayor is part of the senatorial slate of Robredo.

He said Salgodo’s article “dumps on the Aquino/EDSA legacy of ‘hypocrisy'” but forgets that Binay was central to sue legacy.

“This appears to be the Binay faction of the LP getting back at the Aquino faction, which the author feels is ensconced in the Robredo campaign and has simply substituted pink for yellow as its color. It does seem like time has not healed old wounds within the Liberal Party,” he said.
