President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday defended the closure of all cemeteries in the country from October 29 to November 2, 2021 to avoid crowding and ensure the health and safety of everyone.
“Ito ay talagang utos, mandatos ng IATF (Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases) at wala tayong magawa at sumunod kasi sila ‘yung may authority na magsabi in so far as the fight against COVID,” Duterte said in his pre-recorded “Talk to the People” address aired today, November 3.
“If they think it’s really not good for health to be crowding in cemeteries in great numbers, those are problems they expected and tried to avoid,” the Chief Executive said.
Due to the threat of Covid-19, the government’s Covid-19 task force earlier ordered the closure of cemeteries, including memorial parks and columbariums, during Undas week.
The IATF encouraged families to visit the graves of their departed loved ones before or after the closure dates.
