Morale boost ahead of Tokyo Olympics: House panel OKs resolution commending EJ Obiena

By Billy Begas

The House Committee on Youth and Sports has adopted a resolution congratulating and commending Tokyo Olympics-bound pole vaulter Ernest John Obiena for winning gold medal in two prestigious athletic tournaments in Germany last February.

Obiena won a record-breaking gold medal at the Internationales Stadionfest (ISTAF) Indoor Athletic Tournament on February 6, 2021.

He cleared a height of 5.80 meters in the Men’s pole vault final round in Berlin to claim a new Philippine national indoor pole vault record that he previously set at 5.62 meters at Karlsruhe World Indoor Tour Meeting on January 29, 2021.

Obiena delivered a second consecutive golden performance of the season clearing 5.68 meters in the men’s pole vault event at the Post-Spar-und-Darlehnsvereian (PSD) Bank Indoor Meeting in Dortmund, Germany on February 7, 2021.

“Whereas, the Philippines’ top pole vaulter simultaneously twice broke the previous Philippine record that he set, thus making this victory a truly great achievement that has shown the entire world the skill, discipline, and competitiveness of Filipino athletes,” House Resolution 1843 read.

“It is fitting that Tokyo Olympics-bound Obiena be commended for setting a new Philippine record, and for bringing honor and pride to the country,” the resolution further read.
